Caribbean spirit

US photographer Wyatt Gallery's images reflect a part of the Caribbean that is often ignored — or perhaps not ever seen — by the average holiday visitor. These images taken during a six-month journey around the Caribbean, capture the spirituality that emanates from particular places and buildings, whether they are religious or secular. They form part of a study that Gallery is continuing in Trinidad and Tobago on a Fulbright scholarship

Through these quiet meditative photographs, New York photographer Wyatt Gallery captures spirituality that emanates from particular Caribbean landscapes and buildings, both religious and secular.

Although there are no people in the photographs, we feel a human presence and its impact on the sites. But the photographer allows nothing to distract the eye from the intricacies of these diverse locations. By examining architectural design, colour and natural lighting, we become aware of the multifaceted history, culture and environment of the Caribbean.

Gallery is currently on a Fulbright Scholarship in Trinidad, where he is photographing spiritual sites that exemplify the diverse cultural history of the island.
