The sheer unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic has been, ironically, one of its most predictable aspects. As this issue of Caribbean Beat goes to press, it’s unclear what form T&T’s annual Carnival may take in 2022. But for those who love ritual and pageantry, come Carnival weekend at the end of February, there’s nowhere else on earth they’d rather be but the very heart of the splendid bacchanal. The traditional blue devil is a living lesson in survival and resilience, and a metaphor for what truly matters in Carnival: defiant, proud, and blazing its glory.
