Celebrating the end of the Ramadan fast, Muslim women prepare to pray in the Onafhankelijksplein, the park at the heart of Paramaribo’s heritage district. Falling this year in the middle of July, the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is observed by Muslims around the world, and is marked by a public holiday in Suriname, as in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
