Native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia, nutmeg — the sweet, aromatic seed of the Myristica fragrans tree — has been a prized culinary spice for centuries. Introduced to Grenada in the nineteenth century, it’s become a symbol of the Caribbean’s Spice Island, even appearing on the national flag. And as Christmas approaches, cooks around the region will reach for their nutmeg to add seasonal flavor to everything from cakes to eggnog.
